DJ, Dress and changes afoot...Oh My!

Hello wonderful friends!
So I (the worst blogger on the planet) have had a very busy couple of months. The holidays were busy, work is off the wall crazy, I bought a car, the dogs became vegetarians, and still wedding planning marches on.

The DJ was such a struggle and in Nov. we thought we had found the perfect solution. DJ Skye seemed like the best fit for us and our event and was willing to sign off on the 'do not play' list. Unfortunately (depending on your perspective), DJ Skye will also be getting married and has hung up her headphones. I tried stalking her online, but with no luck. So, we will have DJ Gary. He's a really nice organized guy with a long career in radio and wonderfully soothing voice. After a long phone conversation, we were convinced and have put down the deposit.

Wedding dress shopping is progressing, but everything is fairly expensive. I found a very nice dress at Amy Kushel (they don't allow pictures, but here is the one from the website).
The dress is $1,700 which includes all alterations. However, I would still need a foundation garment.

At Dark Garden (THE place to go for corsets in the bay area) I had very nice discussion with the owner about my options. If they make me a corset to go under a wedding dress it will be $950. If they make me a corset that serves as the top of my outfit and a skirt it will be $2500-$3000.

Later on at Priscilla of Boston we found several lovely dresses. Some that were very similar to the one above and then some fun ones like the one below. I've actually started thinking about a short dress for the wedding. I have an official appointment with them next weekend (this visit was just an informal play date with wonderful friends Cat and Jared)

And finally I have a little news that may be distressing. We are having some troubles with our Ohio location. Nothing is wrong with the venue, but we may soon be discussing have the wedding in a very different location. I am not yet sure what will happen. Nothing to worry about and I am sure the whole situation will be resolved in the best way possible.

Lots of love from your often blog absent bride!

Ohio the Venues

(sorry this post is so late, it was a draft for a while and then I got super sick and didn't do any work on it)

Saturday we landed in Akron with little to no sleep, but earlier enough to keep all of our venue appointments.

First up Todaro's:
We pulled into the parking lot during a torrential downpour and there on the edge of the parking lot is the outdoor ceremony site.

The staff was really friendly and clearly had done about a million weddings. We toured room#3 (which would be our location) it was nice in that it has it's own access and bathrooms (the other two share a set). Although it doesn't have any windows, the walls are grooved and lit. The walls were a nice neutral color but there are also two sets of gold colums (yuck). We've heard from everyone how wonderful their food is, but our major issue is we can't figure out how to do a cocktail hour, ceremony, and reception in a row in this little room.

Next we were off to the Rosemont country club:

This location wasn't even on my original list. I wasn't very impressed by their website and had counted them out when a couple of months ago Patty attended an event there, set us some pictures, and suggested it might be worth seeing. I have to say she couldn't have been more right. The drive leading into the club is long enough to make it feel private and secluded. The club itself is breathtaking and pictures just don't do it justice. Huge windows, fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, a patio balcony overlooking the golf course. It's absolutely gorgeous, but we were concerned because we weren't sure if it would be too big or not and no one could really vouch for the food.

We rounded out the day with a visit to the favorite, Roses Run:

From the beginning I was pretty sure this was going to be the location. It's super close to Patty and Jim's, beautiful website with nice pictures, and a menu that I think we could work with. We arrived while they were setting up for a ghastly Barbie wedding. Pink as far as the eye could see! That poor groom. They even had matching neon pink plastic cups for the bar. I knew that in the main room their is a high ceiling area and a low ceiling area, but you don't get a sense for how jarring the room is or just how low that ceiling is until you are actually there. We met with Jill, who didn't remember anything she and I talked about (including the great deal we agreed to). Then we went upstairs to see the ceremony site which has no windows and they would charge us $500 to use. As we were leaving she was about to cancel the bride's dream outside cocktail hour because apparently their patio is a wind tunnel. Last, but certainly not least, we've heard that their food sucks.

On Tuesday we headed out to the final venue, Stan Hywet:

I ah apparently took no pictures of this final venue. Basically, we knew within seconds that it was both out of our price range and would be a heck of a lot more work than any of the other sites. They had crazy high site fees and no onsite cater. Steve said it seemed like something straight out of the Shining. I thought it was an interesting historic site and am glad I got to see it, but it was not very pretty for as much as they were charging.

Tuesday night we headed over to the Rosemont Country Club for dinner. They have amazing bread and one of the better salads I ever eaten in the midwest. The entrees were sort of hum hum and Patty's chicken was dry. I was getting that nervous "crap our food is going to suck even if the venue is beautiful" feeling when the chef came over to chat with us. We had a long talk and some exciting developments took place. First, the chef is new and comes to the Rosemont from the Bellagio steak house in Las Vegas. Second, he has a ton of vegetarian experience and was visibly excited to create a menu, rather than just walk us through the standard wedding banquet fare. He's going to work on it and email us menus in a couple of months. Last, but not least, he didn't flinch when we brought up the dry chicken, just apologized and explained that it sometimes happens with grilling and slicing, but that even if we have chicken at the wedding he wouldn't prepare it that way.

Okay so long post short, we are getting married and having a huge party at the Rosemont Country Club on 10-10-2010. Yay!!

Preview of coming attractions

Hey,
We did it, we moved! It is everything we thought it would be and more. The apartment is terrific, Steve is in laundry heaven and we love the surrounding area. It is full of amazing restaurants, shopping, and beautiful hiking. We are also really excited for Kate and Aric to move in next door.

Thursday I have the first real interview with a company I really want to work for and a position I am really excited about. At 10:30am PST, everybody wish me luck!

Okay so right before we moved I stumbled across the most amazing list of websites. I'm going to be going through a bunch of them, but wanted to post them here so that you can all check them out too if you've got a little time on your hands.

PS Update on a previous post: Somehow in the course of our move (according to the Wii Fit) I've lost 6lbs, yay! Down to 137lb and I set a new goal 132 by May.

Okay Here are the Sites (all 75 seperated into categories):

Is this stupid?

Okay,
Just got off the phone with Roses Run Country Club. Jill was super sweet and funny. They are willing to charge us the same price for family style as they would for a buffet (which is awesome!). They are also willing to throw in the staff to serve hot apps for no additional charge. I absolutely love their can do attitude (she actually said, if there is anything we want that is not on their menu, they are more than willing to do it).

So, is it stupid that I am so much more excited about having the wedding at a country club rather than a party center?

It shouldn't make a difference if the the location is beautiful and the menu is right, but something about "party center" provokes this visceral yuck reaction. I already weeded out locations that actually say party center in their names, but do you think I am making a mistake? Are party centers better able to provide the best service? Would the event run more smoothly? Is it weird to ask to vet your event staff before the actual day of?

Okay, here are the pictures from Roses Run. They have a large vaulted ceiling room downstairs that can do 300 people. Upstairs there are two rooms that hold about 150 people each. She was saying that they typically do receptions downstairs and then the ceremony upstairs for winter weddings or outside by the lake for the rest of the year.

Wedding Time and Style

We really want everyone to have fun at the wedding and feel comfortable, so when we started planning it we decided to chuck out some of the aspects of weddings that are stressful for the guests and the happy couple.

1. No Church- we want to have the ceremony and the reception in the same place, so once you arrive you are set and ready to enjoy the whole thing

2. No one is late- I'd like to do a cocktail hour before the ceremony to allow everyone time to get there and get ready before the actual ceremony

I'm thinking we could get started late afternoon/early evening have a cocktail hour, 45min-1 hour ceremony and then head straight into the reception.

3. Everyone get's to be with their family and friends- no head table and no single's table

We have a large family and friends from a lot of different places, we think everyone (including the members of the wedding party) will have more fun if they get to sit with their immediate family or the friends they know.

(Unreasonable Bride moment in 5...4...3...2...

I really want a candle lit ceremony, I know this may be more hassle to pull off and that the photographer will not be amused, but I think it is both beautiful and memorable.

The Basics

Oh yuck we've started a blog...

Ok, but we have a pretty good reason. Our friends and family are terrific! We couldn't possibly plan this wedding and stay sane without you. We've already gotten some great suggestions and we know you have tons more. We really want to make sure that we haven't forgotten to share information with anyone and that everyone who cares knows what's going on.

So we're going to blog it. We'll post the details we know and the questions we have and you let us know what you think (honestly if the dress is ugly I want to know now and not at a drunken Christmas party 10 years from now)

The Stuff we've got so far:

Date: Sunday October 10th 2010 (I know I know it's a Sunday, but I'm pretty stuck on this date)

Location: Somewhere in the wilds of Ohio (we have a short list of vendors we are trying to get quotes from that I'll post in the sidebar)

4. Sarah Maple
